alsace
Alsace is really unique amongst the wine regions of France. It has one of the driest climates with warm summers but cold winters with the Vosges mountains dominating the east of the region.
Around 90% of the grapes grown here are white and many of them have their origins outside France, for example Gerwurztraminer, which originates from the other side of the Rhine river.
It is also one of the only areas of France to label the grape variety on wine labels.
The diverse nature of the soils and the climate allow many different grape varieties to be grown; Pinot Blanc, Tokay Pinot Gris, Gerwurztraminer, Sylvaner and Auxerrois to name but a few.
In 2005 there were around 800 hectares under organic/biodynamic production with 83 producers. Our partners in this area are:
Domaine Frey a biodynamic producer and we feature a great Sylvaner, (but we have many more Trade wines) and
Domaine Weber an organic producer and we feature a range of wines.
