languedoc-roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon is the largest wine producing region of France covering an astounding 330,000 hectares under production (815,000 acres.) The climate is heavily influenced by the mediterranean, with hot summers and warm winters, but the areas on the inland hills like Minervois or Limoux, are normally cooler.
Given the size of the region, there is a completely diverse range of soils based around limestone hills and alluvial plains.
Languedoc produces a huge amount of wine (around 290 million bottles equivalent) and the amount grown as organic or biodynamic is small, but gradually increasing. In 2005, there was around 330 producers with just over 5,000 hectares in production. So, there is a long way to go!
The main grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignan, Merlot, Syrah and Grenache for the reds and Chardonnay, Ugni Blanc, Muscat, Sauvignan and Viognier for the whites.
There are many different appelations including Banyuls, Corbières, Limoux, Côteaux de Languedoc, Fitou, Côtes de Roussillon and Côtes de Roussillon Villages. The Languedoc-Roussillon wines are good easy drinking wines for most occasions and there can be some real gems in amongst them.
Our current partners in this area are:
Domaine Cazes the largest biodynamic producer in France.
Chateau Bousquette
Domaine Lionel Faivre who produces a great Corbières that is included in our mixed case.
