provence
The mediterranean influenced climate of Provence is hot and sunny. Great for the holidays, but the fierce heat can cause problem for vines and wine producers.
The soils are varied, ranging from granite to sandstone and some limestone and flint. The main grape varieties grown are Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and italian varieties like Neilluccio and Sciacarello for the reds and Ugni Blanc and White Grenache for the whites.
The Romans made red wines here but nowadays the region is better known for its rosés. The quality of the wines from Provence is sometimes questioned by the "wine buffs" and some of the normal wines can indeed be rather dull, but this is where the organic producers score, with good quality and good tasting wines.
The appelations include Bouches-du-Rhone, Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and Côtes-de-Provence. There were 3,500 hectares in production with around 250 producers of organic and biodynamic wine in 2005. Our partners in this region are:
Domaine Les Fouques Domaine de la Sauveuse.
